How to make a wifi plaque that works
Type the password exactly
Capitals, lower case and symbols all count. Copy it from the router or from the settings of a phone that is already connected. If your network has no password, pick «No password» in the security menu.
It is almost always WPA
Networks from the last fifteen years use WPA, WPA2 or WPA3, and the WPA option covers all of them. WEP belongs to old routers. If your network is hidden, tick «Hidden network» or phones will not find it.
Prefer the guest network
If your router has one, point the plaque at the guest network: visitors get internet but no access to your computers, cameras or printers.
Size and mounting
At 90 mm of code the plaque is about 10 cm wide, readable from a distance. The two holes are 4.6 mm for ordinary screws or hooks, and double-sided tape holds it fine too. The relief starts at 3.5 mm, so a single-nozzle printer can still do two colours.
Frequently asked questions
How does a wifi QR code work?
The code stores the network name and the password. When you scan it with the camera, the phone offers to join and connects on its own, with nothing to type.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes. Both have read wifi codes straight from the camera for years. On some older Android phones you need to open the system QR scanner.
Is it safe to put the password in a QR code?
The password is written inside the code, so anyone who scans it can connect. It is the same as leaving it on a note: hang the plaque where only your guests go and, if you can, use your router's guest network.
What if I change the wifi password?
You will need to print a new plaque: the code carries the password inside and cannot be updated remotely.
Does it work with hidden or 5 GHz networks?
Yes. For a hidden network, tick «Hidden network». If both bands share a name, the phone picks the best one; if they have different names, make a plaque for the one you want guests to use.
How big are the holes for hanging it?
4.6 mm across, enough for ordinary screws or hooks. If you would rather not drill, two strips of double-sided tape hold it in place.
Is my password stored anywhere?
No. Everything is generated inside your browser: neither the network name nor the password is sent to any server.
