How to print a QR keychain properly
Recommended size
Between 45 and 55 mm of code. Below that each little square drops under 1.5 mm and phones start to struggle. The tool shows you the live figure: if it turns red, make the keychain bigger or use a shorter link.
The ring hole
It comes out 5.2 mm across, the usual size for keychain rings. If your ring is thicker, increase the keychain size and the hole grows with it.
Filament and layers
PLA is fine and PETG copes better with sun and knocks. With 0.2 mm layers the code prints sharp. No supports needed: it is a flat part.
Two colours with one nozzle
The relief starts at 3 mm: add a filament change at that layer and the base prints in one colour and the code in another. A full plate of keychains takes a couple of hours.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a QR keychain be to scan reliably?
With a short link, 45 to 55 mm works well. What matters is not the overall size but that each little square of the code is at least 1.5 mm; the tool shows that figure as you design.
Does the hole fit any keyring?
The hole is 5.2 mm across, the standard size for keyrings sold in any hardware shop. For a thicker ring, increase the keychain size.
PLA or PETG?
PLA is easier to print and plenty for an indoor keychain. PETG handles heat in a car, sunlight and knocks better, so it is the safer pick outdoors.
How long does it take to print?
A single keychain is around 20 to 30 minutes. They are flat parts, so you can fill the plate and get ten or twelve in a couple of hours.
Can I print it in two colours without a multi-colour printer?
Yes. The relief starts at 3 mm: add a filament change at that layer in your slicer and you get a base and a code in different colours.
Can I sell the keychains I print?
Yes. The files you download are yours and you can use them commercially.
Does the QR code expire?
No. The link lives inside the drawing itself, so the keychain keeps working forever, with no scan limit and without depending on this website.
