Everything about the magnet and the print

    Which magnet to buy

A round one, 20 mm across and 2 mm thick, neodymium or ferrite. They cost pennies in hardware and craft shops. The recess is made to that size, with a tenth of a millimetre to spare.

    How to glue it

A drop of superglue or epoxy in the bottom of the recess. The recess is 2.2 mm deep and the magnet 2 mm, so it sits below the surface and will not scratch the fridge.

    Size and grip

At 55 mm of code the part is about 6 × 7 cm and weighs very little: a single neodymium magnet holds it easily. If you make it much bigger, glue two magnets or use a stronger one.

    Printing

It prints flat, without supports. The relief starts at 4 mm, so a single-colour printer can do two colours with a filament change at that height.

    Frequently asked questions

Which magnet do I need and where do I buy it?

A round 20 × 2 mm one, neodymium or ferrite. Hardware shops, stationers and craft shops all carry them for pennies. The recess in the part is made to that size.

How do I glue the magnet in?

A drop of superglue or epoxy inside the recess. The recess is 0.2 mm deeper than the magnet, so it sits flush and will not scratch the fridge door.

Will it hold on the fridge?

Yes. At the default size the part weighs a few grams and a 20 mm neodymium magnet holds it with room to spare. If you scale it up a lot, use two.

Can I print it without buying magnets?

You can stick self-adhesive magnetic tape on the back. It holds less than neodymium, but it is fine for a small part.

Does it scan well from the fridge?

Yes, it reads from a hand's width away. It is a vertical surface and can catch reflections, so use a light base and a dark code, which is what the tool does by default.

Can I get two colours with an ordinary printer?

Yes. The relief starts at 4 mm: add a filament change at that layer in your slicer.

Can the recess size be changed?

The recess is fixed at 21 × 2.2 mm, the size of the most common magnets. For other magnets, scale the whole part in your slicer or ask us for another size.
